My Identity, My Shadow. Never Apart: Identity Day and ID intelligence

16 September is International Identity Day – an occasion that is easy to overlook, because for most people identity is something taken entirely for granted. A card in a wallet, a password committed to memory, a face scanned at a border. It is only when one of these elements goes missing, is stolen, or no longer matches reality that the sheer importance of identity to everyday life becomes visible.

This year's campaign artwork captures that idea precisely: the shadow of a person – and within it, faintly outlined, the shapes of an ID card, a passport, a birth certificate, a digital credential. Four forms of the same thing: proof of who we are. Whether physical or digital, on-premise or in the cloud, biometric or document-based, our identity always casts a shadow, and that shadow must match us without a gap. The moment it doesn't, institutions lose trust in people, and people lose trust in institutions.

That intersection is exactly where I have spent more than 30 years working – on ePassport and eID programmes, in border management and civil registration reform, alongside governments, UN agencies and industry. One thing keeps being confirmed: identity systems rarely fail because of the technology alone. They fail where the document, the database and the human being no longer cast the same shadow.

To mark the occasion: 50% off ID Intelligence

To celebrate International Identity Day, we're also opening up our own tool for the industry. ID Intelligence brings together five specialist publications from the identity, biometrics and border-security sector into one daily feed – curated, rather than painstakingly gathered by hand.

For a limited time, while the contingent lasts, the first annual plan is available at 50% off: id-intelligence.app

Anyone working professionally in identity should keep an eye on their own "shadow" – and know what's happening across the industry. The two belong together. Just like identity and shadow: never apart.
